Education

Professor Maja Bohač graduated from the School of Medicine, University of Zagreb, and completed her residency in ophthalmology under the mentorship of Prof. Nikica Gabrić, MD, PhD.

She began her advanced training in refractive surgery under the mentorship of Prof. Gabrić, with further training in London, Zurich, Barcelona, Cologne, and Strasbourg. As part of her academic education, Prof. Bohač completed postgraduate studies in Biomedicine and Health at the School of Medicine, University of Zagreb.

In April 2017, she defended her doctoral thesis, "Comparison of Mechanical Microkeratomes and Femtosecond Lasers," earning her PhD.

She was awarded the academic title of Assistant Professor at the School of Medicine, University of Rijeka in 2021, for her work on "Corneal Refractive Surgery."
She was awarded the academic title of Associate Professor at the School of Medicine, University of Rijeka in 2026.

Work area

Professor Maja Bohač.MD, PhD specializes in anterior segment surgery.

She performs laser vision correction, cataract surgery, and the implantation of premium intraocular lenses and ICL lenses. Within the Refractive Surgery Department, she leads a team of 10 refractive surgeons and oversees the introduction of new laser refractive surgery technologies to further improve outcomes.

She specializes in laser surgery for complex cases: corneal scarring and damage, as well as eyes with a history of any type of previous refractive procedure. To date, Prof. Bohač, MD, PhD, has performed more than 30,000 laser procedures and actively trains 14 colleagues. She has built her expertise working across Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and North Macedonia, continuously contributing to the advancement of refractive surgery in the region.

The introduction of new methods

She was among the first physicians in the region to begin using femtosecond lasers.
She is one of the first doctors to perform laser correction of presbyopia (reading vision), and the first doctor in the region to perform a new type of laser vision correction — lenticule extraction surgery.

Publications and research

She has published 45 papers indexed in Current Contents (CC), the most significant of which concern the treatment of high astigmatism with excimer lasers.

Membership in associations

She is a member of the International Society of Refractive Surgery (ISRS), the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS), the Croatian Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the Croatian Ophthalmological and Optometric Society.

Professor Maja Bohač is a member of the organizing committee of the Croatian Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgery (CSCRS). She regularly participates as an active lecturer and educator at their annual meetings.
